How to Install and Adjust IKEA Utrusta Hinges (Fix Crooked Cabinet Doors)

If you've ever built IKEA cabinets, you’ve probably run into the Utrusta hinge. It’s sturdy, widely used in IKEA kitchens, and fairly simple to install — but adjusting it can be frustrating if you don’t know which screws control what.

If your cabinet doors are:

  • not closing properly

  • sitting crooked

  • too far apart

  • hitting each other,

then the hinge adjustments likely just need to be fine-tuned.

In this guide, I’ll walk through how to install IKEA Utrusta hinges, how to adjust them properly, and a few tricks to improve the soft-close speed.

Tools Needed

You don’t need many tools for this installation

If you don’t already have one, this basic screwdriver set works well for cabinet adjustments:

What are IKEA Utrusta Hinges?

The IKEA Utrusta hinge is the standard hinge used for most IKEA cabinet doors. It includes a built-in soft-close damper, which means the door closes slowly instead of slamming shut.

One feature I like about these hinges is that the installation screws are separate from the adjustment screws, which makes alignment easier.

This means you if you somehow mess up the alignment and strip all the screws, you still have the option to remove the hinge and replace it, instead of being stuck with a crooked door.

Step 1: Install the Door Side of the Hinge

The first step is installing the hinge directly into the cabinet door.

  1. Insert the hinge into the pre-drilled hole in the cabinet door.

  2. Use a rubber mallet to gently tap it into place.

  3. Push down the hinge clip to lock it.

Unlike some hinge systems, this part does not require screws.

Step 2: Install the Cabinet Side of the Hinge

Next, attach the hinge plate inside the cabinet.

  1. Position the hinge plate inside the cabinet wall.

  2. Make sure the hook portion faces outward.

  3. Align it at the same height as the hinge on the cabinet door.

  4. Secure it using the screws provided by IKEA.

Step 3: Attach the Door to the Cabinet

Once both hinge pieces are installed, you can attach the cabinet door.

  1. Line up the hinge with the hinge plate.

  2. Hook the hinge into the plate.

  3. Push until you hear a click.

That click confirms the hinge is properly locked into place.

How to Remove an IKEA Cabinet Door

If you ever need to remove the door, it’s quick and simple.

  1. Locate the small metal release tab on the back of the hinge.

  2. Press the tab.

  3. Pull the door away from the cabinet.

The hinge will detach from the cabinet plate.

Important Tip: Do NOT Use Power Tools to Adjust Hinges

While power drills are fine for installing the hinge screws, never use them to adjust the hinge alignment screws.

The screws used for adjustments are fairly soft and can easily:

  • strip

  • over-tighten

  • damage the hinge

Always use a manual screwdriver for hinge adjustments.

How to Adjust IKEA Utrusta Hinges

If your cabinet doors aren’t aligned correctly, you can fix it using the three adjustment screws. Each screw moves the door in a different direction.

Adjusting the Soft-Close Speed

Utrusta hinges include a built-in soft-close damper.

When both soft-close mechanisms are active, cabinet doors may take around 5 seconds to close.

If you prefer a faster close, try this trick:

Turn off the soft-close feature on one hinge while leaving the other hinge active.

This typically reduces closing time to about 3 seconds.

Tip for Large Cabinet Doors

If your cabinet door uses three hinges, I recommend:

  • leaving soft-close on the top and bottom hinges

  • turning it off on the middle hinge

This keeps the door controlled without making it close too slowly.

What If You Strip the Adjustment Screws?

Mistakes happen — especially when you're learning DIY.

The good news is that the adjustment screws are separate from the installation screws.

If you accidentally strip the adjustment screw:

  1. Remove the hinge from the cabinet.

  2. Replace it with a new hinge.

Not ideal, but it prevents your cabinet door from being permanently crooked.

Alternative Hinges (Budget Option)

If you're working with solid wood cabinets, you may have more flexibility with cheaper hinges.

Some multi-pack hinge sets online can be significantly cheaper than IKEA hinges.

I’ve also used budget cabinet hinges like these for some projects when working with real wood cabinets.

Final Thoughts

Once you understand how the adjustment screws work, IKEA Utrusta hinges are actually very easy to work with.

The key things to remember are:

  • install the hinge correctly

  • adjust the correct screw for alignment

  • use a manual screwdriver

  • experiment with soft-close settings

A few small adjustments can completely fix crooked cabinet doors.
